Sr. Presidente,

Dentro de algumas semanas terá lugar em Copenhaga a cimeira do clima e
gostaria de chamar a sua atenção para a necessidade de um estudo sobre a
criação de gado, a indústria com maior impacto ambiental, sendo que o
panorama ambiental é já de si alarmante.

Como sabe, a Organização das Nações Unidas para a Agricultura e a
Alimentação (FAO) declara no seu relatório “Pecuária, a maior ameaça ao meio
ambiente” que a indústria pecuária emite mais CO2 que aquele produzido pela
indústria dos transportes (todos os meios de transporte em conjunto).

Além disso o Banco Mundial declarou que desde 1970, 90% da desflorestação da
Amazónia está relacionada com as necessidades da indústria da carne,
contribuindo assim para o agravamento dos efeitos do aquecimento global, que
tanto nos preocupa hoje em dia.

Deste modo, o sector é responsável por 37% de todo o metano originado por
actividades humanas (que influencia o aquecimento global 23 vezes mais que o
CO2), principalmente produzido pelo sistema digestivo dos ruminantes, e 64%
da amónia que contribui para a chuva ácida.

A criação intensiva também degrada os solos e põe em risco as reservas de
água visto que a produção de apenas um quilo de bife necessita de 323 m² de
pasto, 7 a 16 quilos de grãos ou soja, e pode ir até aos 15.500 litros de
água!

Além disso, o sector pecuário tem um impacto directo no aquecimento global,
na poluição dos solos e fontes de água, e constitui um verdadeiro
desperdício, já que quase um terço dos cereais colhidos a nível global estão
a ser usados para a produção de carne.

Se os países “desenvolvidos” reduzissem o consumo de carne, seria possível
aliviar consideravelmente e a nível global, a fome, que mata perto de 6
milhões de crianças por ano.

Sr. Presidente, confrontado com estes factos inegáveis e, de certo modo,
alarmantes, é nosso dever colectivo agir a todos os níveis, incluindo a
promoção de um estilo de vida vegetariano.

O lançamento de um “Dia Europeu Vegetariano” seria uma forte aposta. O já
existente “Dia Mundial do Vegetarianismo” a 1 de Outubro ainda não tem
infelizmente o reconhecimento europeu, e por esse motivo seria extremamente
positivo promover este evento na Comunidade Europeia e reforçar a iniciativa
com uma campanha de informação sobre o impacto ambiental da criação de gado.

O vegetarianismo é uma opção de cidadãos responsáveis. Recusar o consumo de
carne representa ainda a melhor maneira de protestar contra a desumanização
e crueldade durante a criação intensiva, o transporte e o abate de milhões
de animais que são sacrificados e mortos por ano.

Sr. Presidente, agradeço-lhe que tenha em conta estas preocupações e as
aborde durante a próxima cimeira do clima.
